Cruise Ship Employment - Golf Instructors Needed for Cruises

Golf enthusiasts can play their favorite game at any time of year, in any weather, as long as they can walk the links and see the green. They often wonder, however, about playing golf while on a cruise. If golf is your game, but the sea beckons you, you can have the best of both worlds. You can teach golf on the high seas.

Most cruise ships offer onboard golf for their golf enthusiast guests. However, if you’re interested in teaching golf on a cruise ship, your choices may be limited. One cruise ship that offers positions for golf professionals is Carnival Cruise Lines. Princess Cruise Line also has golf professionals on some of their ships.

In fact, if you consider yourself to be a high quality golf professional, you may want to apply for this type of cruise ship employment with a company listed above.  They have positions as an independent golf professional, guest professional, or group leader. The following will give additional information for finding a cruise line golf professional position.

Who is the prime candidate for this type of position? If you consider yourself to be independent, patient, and able to work well with others, you might be a candidate. You must also be motivated, have a good business background, as well as have experience with coordinating both onboard and onshore activities.

You must also have a current passport, have basic computer knowledge, have sports jackets and slacks to match for evening wear, leisure clothing that would be appropriate at a country club, and be able to work 6 to 8 months contracted labor.

Is training available? If you are deemed to be qualified as a golf professional, you will have some training. Training will include advanced teaching technology, how to complete all required reports, and additional training with the corporate office.

What does a golf professional do? Anyone lucky enough to be an onboard golf professional will be required to keep a detailed schedule of any guests interested in their services during the cruise. Most cruise ships will have onboard cages to teach in, but the newer ships will also have limited, or mini, lighted golf courses available for teaching. The professional must be available for private lessons with a guest if they are willing to pay for the professional’s time.

If the ship is docking for a time, the professional will plan and lead interested guests to various golf courses in ports of call. Of course, the larger group the professional can encourage taking these golf trips, the more money they are liable to make.

How exactly does a golf professional receive pay? Pay for this position is primarily based on commissions. Through the golf pro shop onboard, they will receive commissions based on sales; they will also earn commissions for port golf trips, and may be given gratuities at the end of each cruise directly from the guests.  An average is $250-$500, but it can be much higher depending upon the professional’s attitude, their motivation, and energy. Of course, having a great personality is a plus. Truly, this cruise job is among the most coveted cruise line jobs.

The golf professional will receive a staff cabin, three meals a day in the staff mess, and emergency medical treatment. Their only possible expenses would be personal shopping, gratuities for their meals in other areas besides the staff mess, and any bar tab they may incur.

If you’re interested in a golf professional position, your best bet is to spend some time in research. Be sure, too, to look into beach resorts jobs because resorts hire golf instructors en masse. Check out the various cruise ships and see if they have a golf professional or golf concierge position available. Not all cruise lines will have golf positions, in fact some don’t even offer practice cages for their guests.  You can teach golf on the high seas, if you’re lucky enough to find a position on the right cruise ship.
